Ride around the World
This is where you come in! Linked to the Bike to the Future 2008 London - Krakow ride, Les will be looking to encourage as many people as possible to get involved in some form of bike riding event.
- Your event can be as large or small, or as challenging as you would like, but obviously, it is hoped that as many people as possible will participate. To link your cycle ride to Bike to the Future 2008, your event can take place any time between May and September.
- Linking the ride to the 'Ride around the World' target does not mean that you lose control of your event, it simply means that along with others throughout the world, you will be working towards a common set of goals: raising awareness of pancreatic cancer; raising funds to help with vital research into increasing the rates of survival (funds will be raised for Pancreatic Cancer UK who will direct the funds); 'Riding around the World' sends out the message that there are many voices demanding improvements in the current rates of survival.
- Registering your event allows your cycle event to be linked to a wider event, and thus raises the chances of better and coordinated publicity for the key objectives of 'Bike to the Future 2008 - Ride around the World'.
1) Should you want to ride one or more of the stages of the Bike to the Future 2008, London to Krakow ride, Les would welcome your participation and the registration of your ride.
2) Any individual / group (adults) can register a separate cycle ride organised anywhere in the world which will be linked to the core ride. Should you want to get on your bike and organise a parallel event be it with a group of friends, some work colleagues, or an existing cycling group, Les would welcome your participation and the registration of your ride. Have a look at the rides that are already forming part of the 'Ride around the World' event.
3) Any School or Youth Club can register 'safe' riding events
Les has also already got the commitment of a number of schools, and Youth Clubs in both England and Poland, to organise 'safe' cycle rides in support of 'Ride around the World'. One of the Bike to the Future 2008 riders Dave Smithson ('Smit') is a primary school teacher at the Hindley CE All Saints School in Wigan, and already, the school is committed to using Bike to the Future 2008 - 'Ride around the World' as the basis of a school project in the summer term. It will build in cross-curricular activities connected to the ride, geography, maths, health education etc, and will be supported by a Resource Pack which can be used by any school wanting to become involved. And this is where the 'Ride around the World' bit comes in. The intention is that no matter how far you or your group ride, every kilometre / mile registered will count to the collective achievement of 'Riding around the World' - a total distance of 40,076km / 24.904 miles. So even if a young 5 year old manages to cycle 1km, then they will have helped to 'Ride around the World'
Have a look to see how the events already registered are contributing to the 'Ride around the World' target.
