About Bike to the Future
Bike to the Future is the umbrella title for a series of rides organised by Les Niewiara to celebrate his continuing survivorship as a result of his diagnosis and treatment for pancreatic cancer in November 2003.
Bike to the Future 2004
- Reebok Stadium, Bolton to Hammersmith Hospital, London: November 27 - 29, 2004
- Distance: 386 km / 240 miles
The original ride was Bike to the Future 2004, when Les and 9 friends rode from the Reebok Stadium, Bolton to Hammersmith Hospital, London - a distance of 240 miles in 2.5 days. Completed on November 29th 2004, the ride coincided with the first anniversary of Les' surgery to have a cancerous tumour removed, and signified Les' return to fitness following the surgery and subsequent chemotherapy. The ride raised £16,700 for pancreatic cancer research - full details of the ride can be found in the fundraising section of the Pancreatic Cancer UK website or directly from Bike to the Future 2004.
Bike to the Future 2005 - C2C (Coast to Coast)
- Whitehaven to Tynemouth: September 16 - 18, 2005
- Distance: 230 km / 143 miles
In September 2005, Les and friends completed the famous northern coast to coast route purely for pleasure and based on the group's continuing involvement in cycling that started with the original bike ride. It was a step up for the group as although shorter than the original ride, it took in the substantial hills of the Lake District and the Pennines.
Bike to the Future 2006 - CC2CC
- Chepstow Castle to Cardiff Castle (via Brecon): September 18 - 19, 2006
- Distance: 182 km / 113 miles
Les and friends decided to continue their acquaintance with hills as they took on the Black Mountains and some of the Brecon Beacons, and again purely for pleasure.
Bike to the Future 2007 - Cotswold Killer 8
- Figure of 8 centred on Stow on the Wold: September 15 - 16, 2007

Les and friends spent an idyllic weekend in the beautiful Cotswold countryside in the last sunny weekend of the year, and a perfect way for Les to celebrate his return to fitness after his latest bout of treatment.
